Governments first imposed taxes on alcohol and cigarettes under the claim that they were trying to make people stop for their own good

Governments first imposed taxes on alcohol and cigarettes under the claim that they were trying to make people stop for their own good. But as always, as the governments became addicted themselves to the tax revenue. Now they have taken the same theory and applied it to tax soft drinks in Philadelphia naturally because they care and are trying to prevent people from drinking too much sugar. New York State has tried to them impose a tax on electronic cigarettes, where the Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo lived up to the Democratic motto – if it moves or does not moves tax it, and if it died, tax everything it possessed. Only the fact that the Republican-controlled Senate in New York, rejected Cuomo’s plan to tax the liquid used in electronic cigarettes. Government always pretends to be raising taxes to help people, but it is always a huge lie for its boils down to just grabbing money.
Now all the fuss over the environment and the push to electric cars has a tremendous problem in cities such as how does someone pug in their car when they live in a tall apartment building? But the other side of this coin has another problem. Governments have been faced with declining revenues from cigarettes so then they want to tax the alternative to make up for the shortfall in taxes. The same is happening with gasoline and diesel tax revenue. They will start to raise taxes on electricity using the cars as the excuse.
It seems that nobody publishes a simple statistic to reflect how much taxes on fuel is represented in the total budget of the European Union. There is plenty of information on how much tax on fuel countries charge. But when it come to how addicted government is on those fuel taxes seems to be something nobody wants to reveal.
Average price of oil for the last 20 years is 0.98 Euro per litre. In the EU average consumption of petroleum is 12,530,000 barrels a day in 2016. Therefore, taking this very low average price we arrive at the following:
1 BBL = 158.99L
Therefore multiplying this together we get the amount of litres of consumption of petroleum products per day.
Multiply this by 365 to give the yearly total
Multiplying this by 0.98 (conservative figure of the average price of oil for the last 20 yrs)
712,590,159,190 Euros of sales of Petroleum.
Multiplying this by the average tax rate of approximately 60% of the pump price is taxation, we then arrive at EU countries recoup approximately €427,554,095,514 per year in TAX revenues from fuel. Now let us take that as a percentage of total tax revenue in the EU and we arrive at €427,554,095,514 TAX on petroleum products within €5,877,506,000,000 in total 2015 Tax revenues of all 28 member states, and we finally arrive at 7.27% of total TAX revenues comes from the tax on gasoline and diesel.
The cost of going Green to the state budgets is going to be huge. This will lead to tax hikes in other areas to make up the shortfall most likely on electricity. We can expect electricity to rise in taxation dramatically and this will impact people in their apartments in cities who do not even own a car.
Then add the rise in interest rates and we are looking at the next 4 to 5 years of a true crisis in funding government.

In 1989 Trump took out full page ads in NY papers calling for the execution of 5 teenage boys

In 1989 Trump took out full page ads in NY papers calling for the execution of 5 teenage boys. Known now as The Central Park 5 these innocent men (who are Black and Latino) were wrongly convicted for the horrific act of a serial rapist.
So I am not surprised by Trump’s continued actions that support vigilantism, undermine our legal system and threaten our Bill of Rights.
What I am exacerbated by is the complicity of his administration, the Republican Party, his voting block and Democrats that remain publicly neutral to the atrocities he brings upon our democracy.
Two questions from past political and cultural figures go out to all of these people: Have you no decency? What is America to me?

As the sole providers of anesthesia under many circumstances in the Army, nurse anesthetists have to rely on their skills and training, in consultation with the surgeons, to save soldiers’ lives.

If anyone knows this little guys family could you share this or have them contact me plz

If anyone knows this little guys family could you share this or have them contact me plz? The photo has came loose from the headstone and I’m afraid it’s gonna blow away if it’s not fixed. I put it back in place after I found it. Idk if they have a warranty with the company they bought it from to have it fixed. If I don’t hear something in the next few days, I’m gonna try to put some adhesive on it. I’d really like to have permission to do so first though in case that would void any warranty. But I don’t want it to blow away.
This grave is at the Wilson Cemetery in Lunsford. Please share!!

Billy Collins

Billy Collins, American Poet Laureate. My favorite American poet. This says it. DO NOT share the idea you have hatching about a poem, a book, a concept, until it is written, painted, played and the varnish is on it to hold it down from flying out of the window. I have had that happen, with advice of well meaning friends who have no idea of the nature of the unborn poem child still surging unnamed. Grab it while it is still an embryo and let it grow in the womb of your mind and soul and then let it out while it is still growing, for it will grow until its adult forms on the paper or canvas.
Madmen……by Billy Collins
They say you can jinx a poem
if you talk about it before it is done.
If you let it out too early, they warn,
your poem will fly away,
and this time they are absolutely right.
Take the night I mentioned to you
I wanted to write about the madmen,
as the newspapers so blithely call them,
who attack art, not in reviews,
but with breadknives and hammers
in the quiet museums of Prague and Amsterdam.
Actually, they are the real artists,
you said, spinning the ice in your glass.
The screwdriver is their brush.
The real vandals are the restorers,
you went on, slowly turning me upside-down,
the ones in the white doctor’s smocks
who close the wound in the landscape,
and thus ruin the true art of the mad.
I watched my poem fly down to the front
of the bar and hover there
until the next customer walked in–
then I watched it fly out the open door into the night
and sail away, I could only imagine,
over the dark tenements of the city.
All I had wished to say
was that art was also short,
as a razor can teach with a slash or two,
that it only seems long compared to life,
but that night, I drove home alone
with nothing swinging in the cage of my heart
except the faint hope that I might
catch a glimpse of the thing
in the fan of my headlights,
maybe perched on a road sign or a street lamp,
poor unwritten bird, its wings folded,
staring down at me with tiny illuminated eyes.

What is Svaraj

What is Svaraj?
In this provocative turn, Aakash Singh Rathore lays bare the ground of Indian political theory and proposes a brand new alternative called ‘THIN’ SVARAJ.
Why we must decolonize Indian political theory and rescue it from the grip of western theories and historical analysis? Why we can be no more alien to the lived social and political experiences of common people? Why are B. R. Ambedkar’s thoughts opposed to the ‘thick’ Svaraj of M. K. Gandhi, K. C. Bhattacharya and Ramchandra Gandhi?
Friends interested in philosophy, political science, contemporary political theory, South Asian and Indian politics, sociology, modern Indian history, literature and cultural studies, don’t miss this talk of the town!

During the Fronde of the Princes

During the Fronde of the Princes, Conde was besieged in Paris and once when hearing that a Royalist army was on the march decided to meet them in battle but having very few troops he had to call on the services of the ‘milices bourgeoises’, the citizen soldiers of Paris:
“Conde, eyeing his recruits with more suspicion, told them that they might come or stay, as they chose; ‘only’, he added, ‘I would rather take none but bachelors; for if I take married men, and if some of them never come back, their wives will make too much noise’.”
Fronde of the Princes:
