Good morning

Good morning! To my knowledge, Invocation to Daughters should have just gone to print. I love this, seeing the work come to fruition like this!
‘some brown girl’ manuscript progress: I think I’m gonna chill with posting my drafts here, and focus on the thing itself, and maybe start sending out some of this work (bits of it are published in a few places already).
It’s making more sense to me, what I want to do with it, who my speakers are addressing, what kind of uncivil language I want to be using, what I want to be doing with the line and the page.
Oh, and yeah. First week of fall semester killed me. Today, baseball and adult beverages are on the agenda.

Collateral damage

Collateral damage…. from our transcriber here in Iligan, Ace B. Guro
Yesterday, a stray bullet reached our house inside the campus, it broke a glass, and landed few inches away from my sister’s pillow who was sleeping in her room. I found out late because they didn’t want us to worry – as if being in this country is not enough to be worried already.
Honestly, too many wars are being fought in this country and when all of these settle down (assuming it ever will), I wonder if the tally of the people who died to serve the purpose of these wars outnumbers those who died as just another “collateral damage”.
Also, pls stop using that word to justify things. If you think these battles are for everybody’s welfare, you would have to be a monster if you feel deserving of a safety that is bought with insurmountable human cost.
Lifehack: Don’t stay next to your windows and don’t walk in dark alleys. If you die, this country will not weep for you, this country will think you are either guilty of something or a necessary accident.

Just signed a bunch of, like, Bills of Lading and stuff on behalf of my vacationing neighbor

Just signed a bunch of, like, Bills of Lading and stuff on behalf of my

myanmar vacation packages. I always feel like a Melville or Hawthorne character when faced with detailed shipping documents and I LOVE IT. I only wish it could happen at the Custom House.

The author of “Target Rabaul” offered this perspective on the Japanese as background on their acts of everyday brutality to civilians and POW’s:
The Japanese military also experienced a slow but steady deterioration in the value of human rights. This could be seen in the routinely harsh treatment Japanese officers and noncoms inflicted on their own troops. From the beginning of the Meiji period in the late 1800s, the military achieved unswerving discipline through the culture of physical abuse. As Japanese historian Yuki Tanaka would later explain: “Discipline was conducted through bentatsu (the routine striking of soldiers), which was presented as an ‘act of love’ by the officers for the soldiers. Even the Japanese Navy – which was far more Westernized in conduct than the Army – adopted a practice of harsh discipline known as tekken seisai (the iron fist) in the wake of the Russi-Japanese War. It was often called the ai-no-muchi or ‘whip of love’.”

Heartbreaking to hear Malta’s iconic Azure Window was swept away by the mighty Mediterranean Sea yesterday. And while Gozo’s gorgeous landmark may be gone, here’s why Malta’s trio of tiny tropical islands should still be at the top of your "must-see" travel list.
